    Cloud projects

Cloud computing is being used in science, as well as business, entertainment, industry and more.

Read about some of the many cloud projects here.

Project Title: StratusLab -Enhancing Grid Infrastructures with virtualization and cloud technologies

    Synopsis:
StratusLab is focused on applying cloud technologies to grid infrastructures such as the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) to enhance their use.  The project is developing a complete, open-source cloud distribution that allows grid and non-grid resource centres to offer and to exploit an “Infrastructure as a Service” cloud.

Project Title : VENUS-C (Virtual multidisciplinary EnviroNments USing Cloud Infrastructures)

    Synopsis:

VENUS-C aims to explore how cloud computing can be used in European scientific settings . It brings together industrial partners and scientific user communities to develop, test and deploy an industry-quality cloud computing service for Europe. The project currently supports research into bioinformatics, systems biology, drug discovery, civil engineering, civil protection and emergencies and data for science.

Project Title : RESERVOIR (Resources and Services Virtualization without Barriers)

    Synopsis :
The RESERVOIR project worked to enable massive scale deployment and management of complex IT services. The OpenNebula open source toolkit, a key outcome of this project, is now being used as an open reference stack for cloud computing by several new European projects including StratusLab, BonFIRE and 4Caast.

Project title : BonFIRE (Building service testbeds for Future Internet Research and Experimentation)

     Synopsis:

The BonFIRE Project will design, build and operate a multi-site cloud facility to support applications, services and systems research targeting the Internet of Services community within the Future Internet. The BonFIRE Project aims to give researchers access to an experimental facility which enables large scale experimentation of their systems and applications.

    Project title : 4CaaSt

    Synopsis:
The 4CaaSt project aims to create an advanced PaaS Cloud platform to support optimised and elastic hosting of Internet-scale multi-tier applications. 4CaaSt will enable applications from different providers to be tailored to different users, mashed up and traded together. It will provide an easy to use Infrastructure, greatly simplifying design and delivery of tailored services.

    Project title : Contrail

    Synopsis :
The Contrail project aims at removing some constraints that are currently present in cloud systems. It will federate clouds allowing companies and research organisations to easily switch between cloud providers. Contrail will develop a complete, secure cloud computing stack, including Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service.

Project title: mOSAIC – Open-Source API and Platform for Multiple Clouds

Synopsis :The mOSAIC project aims to develop an open-source platform that enables applications to negotiate Cloud services as requested by their users. mOSAIC hopes to tackle the issue of provider lock-in by developing a platform to demonstrate how users can determine and access the cloud provider that offers the best services for them.

Project title: QMUL Cloud Legal Project

Synopsis: The Cloud Legal Project at Queen Mary University in London is a three year project which aims to undertake academic research in relation to legal issues in cloud computing. The project will produce a series of papers to act as informative and practical guides to the legal issues that need to be addressed by customers, providers and regulators of cloud computing.

    Project title: VISION Cloud
VISION Cloud aims to build a scalable and flexible infrastructure for data-intensive storage services and enablers. This infrastructure will facilitate a new data model to raise the abstraction level of storage, data mobility, computational and content-centric access to storage as well as mechanisms for cost-efficiency with provisions for QoS and security guarantees

    Project title: TCLOUDS
TCLOUDS puts its focus on privacy protection in cross-border infrastructures and on ensuring resilience against failures and attacks.  TCLOUDS aims to build prototype internet-scale ICT infrastructure which allows virtualised computing, network and storage resources over the Internet to provide scalability and cost-efficiency. In prototype development, it is a priority to address the challenges of cross-border privacy, end-user usability, and acceptance that are essential for widespread acceptance of such an infrastructure.

    Project title: S-CUBE

S-Cube, the European Network of Excellence in Software Services and Systems, will establish an integrated, multidisciplinary, vibrant research community. This will enable Europe to lead the software-services revolution, and help to shape the software-service based Internet.

Project title: REMICS (Reuse and Migration of legacy applications to Interoperable Cloud Services)
The main objective of the REMICS project is to develop a tool- supported model-driven methodology for migrating applications to interoperable service cloud platforms. REMICS also aims to develop and extend several standards related to knowledge discovery, service interoperability, service modelling in the cloud, and testing and runtime management of services.

    Project title: gSLM
The gSLM project works on Service Level Management (SLM) and Service Delivery Management (SDM), seeking to bring experiences and approaches from commercial ITSM and provide ways to provide them in the grid and e- Infrastructure domain.

    Project title: Cloud4SOA
Cloud4SOA aims to face new challenges investigating new service engineering paradigms, methods and tools supporting the development of the Cloud Governance Application in PaaS context. This development includes the process of decision making, criteria and policies involved in the semantic setting-up, construction, negotiation, acquisition, development, deployment, operations, management of a cloud computing capability.

    Project title: OPTIMIS
OPTIMIS is aimed at enabling organisations to automatically externalise services and applications to trustworthy and auditable cloud providers in the hybrid model. Consequently, OPTIMIS believes its activities will support and facilitate an ecosystem of providers and consumers that will benefit from the optimal operation of services and infrastructures.
